What is Ethereum?
Ethereum launched in 2015 and is the second largest cryptocurrency by market value. Its real innovation is the smart contract, a small program that runs on the blockchain exactly as written. That makes Ethereum a platform for thousands of applications, from decentralized finance to digital collectibles. Ether, often shortened to ETH, is the currency that pays for activity on the network. In 2022 Ethereum switched from energy hungry mining to a system called proof of stake, cutting its electricity use by more than 99 percent while keeping the network secure.
